Rev. Fr. Boby Joy Muttathuvalayil (born in Kerala, India), son of M. J. Joy and Tessy Joy, is a Syro-Malabar Catholic priest of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Kothamangalam. He was ordained to the priesthood on 27 December 2010 at St. George and St. Sebastian Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Thottakkara, Kerala. Since 2017, he has been serving in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Mississauga, Canada. He has been serving as the Pastor of St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Cambridge, Ontario since June 09, 2022. His priestly ministry has been exercised extensively in the diaspora, with pastoral assignments across Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia, including service as pastor of several parishes and missions and as Director of the Western Regional Pastoral Centre in Edmonton.
He is currently pursuing an ecclesiastical doctorate in Canon Law at the Faculty of Canon Law of St. Paul’s University, in affiliation with the University of Ottawa. His proposed doctoral dissertation examines the duty to preserve and observe one’s rite within a Church sui iuris (CCEO c. 40 §§1–3), with special reference to the administration of the sacraments in the Syro-Malabar Church in Canada. He holds a Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL) and a Master of Canon Law (MCL) from the same institutions, a Master’s degree in English Literature from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and degrees in Theology and Philosophy from Pontifical Institutes in India.
In addition to pastoral ministry, Fr. Boby Joy currently serves as Judicial Vicar of the Eparchial Marriage Tribunal, Judge at the Administrative Tribunal, Member of the Eparchial Curia, and Director of the Department of Safe Environment in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Mississauga. He has also served as Director of the Eparchial Commission for Sacred Liturgy, Associate Director of the Department of Family Apostolate, Public Relations Officer, Director of the Media Commission, and as a member of various eparchial commissions and committees. His areas of canonical competence include Eastern Canon Law (CCEO), marriage law and tribunal praxis, liturgical law of the Syro-Malabar Church, and pastoral governance in the context of the Eastern Catholic diaspora.
